Hacktoberfest: Open Source Reflections

This Hacktoberfest wasn’t just about commits or pull requests for us… It was about co-creating, maintaining, and growing open source projects together.

Between us, we maintained and contributed to multiple repositories, led teams, and improved real-world applications that blend creativity with technology.

Sagnik maintained more than 20 open source repositories, including large-scale projects like TalkHeal, Venturalink, SaralSeva, and Spamlyser… Each attracting dozens of contributors, reviewers, and testers, with TalkHeal being the most transformative:
💬 TalkHeal is an AI-powered mental wellness platform built with Streamlit and Gemini API, offering mindful chat, mood tracking, and gamified self-care experiences. What began as a small Tkinter prototype that won Technovision 2023 has now grown into a community-driven mental health assistant, thanks to 50+ contributors.

And among them, Kavlin Kaur stands out as one of the most passionate contributors — beautifully shaping TalkHeal’s Gamification module, Footer system, and Blog/Community sections.
Her consistency, attention to design detail, and willingness to improve every part of the project (no matter how small) made her one of the most valuable contributors across my repositories.

🚍 Crossing Over — Contributing to Happy Trails

In turn, Sagnik contributed to Happy Trails, a project maintained by Kavlin — a poetic, narrative-inspired bus-booking platform that turns every journey into a visual and emotional experience. ✨

Together, we worked on several improvements, including:

• Refactoring the Toast Notification System for accessibility
• Introducing documentation and contribution templates
• Improving environment configuration and deployment flow
• Redesigning booking and authentication templates
• Enhancing UI interactivity while maintaining the platform’s creative essence

It was an inspiring example of mutual collaboration — two maintainers improving each other’s projects, blending logic with design, structure with storytelling.

💬 What We Learned

Hacktoberfest 2025 was a reminder that open source isn’t just about code quality — it’s about connection quality.
We learned how empathy, patience, and respect can sustain a community through long review queues, merge conflicts, and even moments of disagreement.

Maintaining and contributing side by side showed us how open source can be both deeply personal and universally meaningful.

💭 Reflections on Hacktoberfest

Managing multiple repositories, coordinating 100+ contributors, and contributing across domains was challenging, but it reminded us of the spirit that keeps open source alive — mentorship, collaboration, and creativity.

There were late nights, debugging marathons, and plenty of upstream pulls (and repulls 😅), but through it all, we found growth… Not just in our projects, but in how we communicate, support, and build with others.
